Braided Up

A styled braided beauty editorial was in my mind for a very long time - I was just waiting for the right publication to shoot it for.

I’ve collaborated with Harper’s Bazaar Kazakhstan in the past and this time I suggested the rich, earthy colors braided concept to the beauty editor Larissa Azanova.

From past shoots I knew that the braided texture looks best on a blond hair - that’s why getting the right hair color was crucial. Creative director JP Micallef and fashion stylist Sandy Armeni, who are known as a creative duo, were on the same page as I was and we’ve envisioned a similar final result.  We shared our vision with Harper’s Bazaar Kazakhstan and were excited to be featured on the beauty cover + a full editorial story.  To include as many looks as possible, I shot only vertical photos (as one horizontal photo might cover two pages).

The model is the key success factor in every shoot. Dutch beauty Bregje Heinen @ The Lions NY was the absolute perfect match for the concept. I collaborated with the incredible hairstylist Arturo Swayze and makeup artist Misha Shahzada @ see management on a different braided story for Elle – it was an easy decision to go with the same trusted and strong team this time as well. Arturo was able to create his own stunning seven looks based on the moodboard, keeping it classy, cool and sophisticated. Misha started with a clean look and progressed with natural colors to blend in with the overall mood, while not overpowering the attention to hair. Same idea applied to the nails, created by the superstar nail artist Julie Kandalec @ Bryan Bantry Agency.

This was my first time using Broncolor Para 88 and I was highly impressed by the quality of the light. I used Para 88 with a diffuser to tiny soften the light and diminish the contrast. I combined Para 88 with the move 1200 L power pack, which gave me a great flexibility moving it around and eliminated annoying power cords around the studio area. To lighten up the background I used Strip Softboxes (30x120cm) on the sides powered by another move kit. For some looks I fired another head to the sealing to fill in some shadows. In the ‘behind the scenes’ images you’ll see how we’ve used reflectors for another extra fill.

Harper’s Bazaar, my team and I were very happy with the final results!
Looking forward to sharing with you my next adventure with Broncolor and Para…
